OUR STORY
Thirty years ago, our son Tony, asked us if we were interested in opening a barbershop. Our response was a resounding, “no” accompanied with hearty laughter. We were approaching retirement from our career positions with the District and Federal Governments and wanting nothing more to do with work; besides, we knew nothing about the barbering business. Not taking “no” for an answer, he was persistent and after the fourth or fifth time, we gave in and ventured into unknown territory.
With our savings and lots of prayer we opened Like That Barber Shop at 2449 Good Hope Road, S.E., Washington, D.C. in the Fall of 1992. Eight years later, we were blessed to open Like That 2 Barber Shop at 3301 Stanton Road, S.E, Washington, D.C. We moved from that location in September 2018 to 1565 Alabama Avenue, S.E., Washington, D.C. Wanting to own our own building, we were abundantly blessed to expand the business to Maryland by purchasing a building at 3820 Saint Barnabas Road, Suitland, Maryland and opened as Still Like That Barber Shop in February 2022.
Over the years, it has been a journey. One that was filed with plenty of learning experiences, ups and downs, tears and laughter but most of all joy. We have had many barbers work for us but most have stayed and have been gainfully employed for over twenty plus years. All total there are close to 30 barber in all three shops. We consider ourselves “The Like That Family”. We’re more than a mere hair cutting establishment. We believe in the saying, “It takes a village.” The shops are in areas were children are at risk and we’ve given back to the community for causes like the Woodland Tigers Boys and Girls Clubs by purchasing uniforms, given free haircuts for children going back to school and distributed turkeys and food baskets for Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Over the years, many of the children have excelled in school, the military and on jobs making all of us proud. They have become fireman, policemen, officers in the military, supervisors and received college degrees.
Since moving to Maryland, we carry on the tradition of giving back by having a school supplies give-a-way every August and a food basket give-a-way the Saturday before Thanksgiving. We believe in the teaching that if you keep your fist balled up trying to keep what you have for yourself instead of letting some out and sharing with others, no additional blessings can come in for you. Yes, we are proud of the accomplishments of our barbers, our customers and our community. We still go by the same motto from 1992 and that is: “If you’re forced to wear a hat, your cut must not be Like That.”
Peace and Blessings,
Eugene and Sharon Hollingsworth and the Like That Family
